Two-Way Prepositions (Wechselpräpositionen)

★ 21

In German, some prepositions can take Akkusativ or Dativ.

It depends on whether the sentence shows motion (Akkusativ) or location (Dativ).

🔑 Rule of Thumb

  1. Akkusativ → motion, direction (Wohin? = Where to?)
  2. Dativ → position, no motion (Wo? = Where?)

Common Two-Way Prepositions

auf (on)

in (in/into)

an (at/on)

unter (under)

über (over)

vor (in front)

hinter (behind)

neben (next to)

zwischen (between)

🟢 Simple Examples

1. Motion (Akkusativ)

  1. Ich gehe in die Schule. → I go into the school.
  2. Er legt das Buch auf den Tisch. → He puts the book onto the table.
  3. Die Katze läuft unter den Stuhl. → The cat runs under the chair.

2. Location (Dativ)

  1. Ich bin in der Schule. → I am in the school.
  2. Das Buch liegt auf dem Tisch. → The book is on the table.
  3. Die Katze sitzt unter dem Stuhl. → The cat sits under the chair.

✅ Tip for learners: Always ask yourself:

  1. Wohin? (where to?) → Akkusativ
  2. Wo? (where?) → Dativ
