When it comes to movies, there are different opinions. Some will agree with me regarding the choice, while some will say that the recommendations are irrelevant. I won't tell you too much about the plot of the movie, because I know what will happen to the people who do that. :D

Why did I choose these 5 movies?

I tried to make the list of movies that are entertaining, and from which you can learn something more about the nature of the Serbian people, but also of all the peoples in the Balkans. If you are planning to visit Serbia or come to live here, it will be useful for you.

You will get acquainted with the way of life in Serbia, but also with the slang used here. Some of these movies have a lot of swear words, but if you know at least a little about the Serbian language, you know for sure that every day you can come up with a new swear word and that every Serb understands it. It may not be commendable, but the movies I recommend to you certainly are.

1. Sabirni centar (The Meeting Point)

This is one of my favorite movies. The plot is fictitious, but the idea itself represents a true artistic masterpiece. As you get to know Serbian society, this film will become more and more interesting. It represents the link between the dead and the living. An ancient archaeologist finds a Roman tablet that connects "this world" with "the other world". He has a heart attack on the spot and falls into a coma. Then he goes to "the other world" where he meets the people he used to hang out with when he was young, and they were alive. He gets to know their desires and the pains they have in the "other world". The movie is full of details, so every time you watch it you will notice something new. Although I put it in the first place, it might be wiser to watch it among the last, especially if you are learning Serbian and you are not really fluent.

2. Smrt čoveka na Balkanu (Death of a Man in the Balkans)

The movie is a screened theatrical performance. It was recorder with only web camera. There is no cut, the whole movie is one scene. This is dark humor. At the very beginning of the movie, a famous musician commits suicide in his apartment in Belgrade. He leaves a farewell letter and a webcam on. Neighbors heard a gunshot and slowly began to gather in the musician's apartment. Their dialogues, behavior, greed, cold-bloodedness and other traits reflect our man and society as a whole. What particularly interesting is the change in their behavior when they find out that everything they did and said was caught on camera.

Communication and dialogues are simple, so if you learn Serbian you can follow the plot of the movie. You might not recognize our mentality right away, but that's another reason to revisit it later, because you'll get better and better each time.

3. Mala šala (Little joke)

This is also a screen adaptation of a theater play. The film is not long, about an hour, and you can find it on YouTube. This is a comedy. Three friends spend time in a pub every day. One of them regularly plays Lotto (a game of chance). He is famous for never paying a bar bill, not even his own.

The other two notice this and decide to play a joke on him. They tape the drawing of the Lotto (game of chance). I'm going to plant that video on my buddy who thinks he's got a premium. They do all this in order for this one person to treat them once and pay the bill. And for the first time they succeeded. When he found out that he was the "lucky winner", he took them to a bar and paid for drinks all evening. As they celebrate together, they notice that the "lucky winner" has disappeared. They go in search of him. Before they find him and tell him what they have done, the "lucky winner" has already solved some problems with the people on whom he was financially dependent. By the time they found him, it was too late. Many things have happened in the meantime, so they don't know how to tell him the truth, fearing his reaction.

The dialogues are very simple, so you will have no problem following the plot without translation if you are at an intermediate level of Serbian language.

4. Mrtav 'ladan (Frozen Stiff)

It might be a little strange that this is the third movie that revolves around dead people, but it seems like they are the best movies for us, or at least for me. :D

Two brothers are tasked with transporting their grandfather from the hospital to the chapel. Since they have no money, they decide to smuggle him by train. They put him in a compartment and present him to the passengers as a drunk. Since the route is long, they decided to have a drink in the train restaurant. Grandpa is left in the compartment with the other passengers. Among the passengers is a well-known drug dealer who, fearing a raid, hides a package of drugs in their grandfather's jacket and also goes to the restaurant. After the sudden braking of the train, a suitcase falls out of the storeroom and falls on the grandfather. The passengers try to help him and notice that the grandfather is dead. They throw him out of the train in fear. After that, the search for the grandfather starts, in which everyone gets involved. Even though Grandpa is dead, he always somehow manages to escape from them.

In this movie you will hear a lot of slang that is used in our language, so turn on the subtitle and enjoy. Share your impressions when you watch it, because it is impossible to remain indifferent.

5. Južni vetar (South Wind)

The movie was based on the series with the same name. It is of the crime-action genre. Here you will hear a lot of slang that is used in the Serbian language. You will also hear a lot of swear words, but that is what you first learn in Serbian, and if you haven't, you will now. The plot of the film itself is dynamic and represents the reckoning of criminal clans involved in the smuggling of cars and narcotics in the Balkans. The state is involved in all that. Plenty of blood, shooting, fast driving and action runs throughout the film. If you like this genre, I recommend watching the series as well. There are not many episodes, and you will watch it in one sit.

The language spoken is not too complicated, so you can try watching the movie without subtitles. Because of a lot of slang, it might still be better to use a subtitle and listen carefully.

These are the most interesting domestic movies for me and I regularly recommend them to everyone who visits me. I believe that, in addition to entertainment, it will help you to expand your vocabulary at least a little and familiarize yourself with the slang in our language.

Which domestic movies would you recommend and why? I would like to hear your opinion too?
