Building sentences in Spanish

Construcción de oraciones - YouTube

Hello! Today, we are learning how to build sentences in Spanish. You will learn how to take the words you've learned and weave them together to form meaningful sentences. You have to know, is basically the same as in english, so there is nothing to worry about :)

Note: We'll learn how to write FULL sentences. When talking in informal contexts, people often omit some parts. But that is for later. Right now, we are learning the "correct way" with full sentences.

1. Subject + verb.

Every sentence needs a subject (who or what does the action) and a verb (the action).

Examples: María come/María eats. Yo fui/I went. Nosotros visitamos/We visited. Ellos cantaron/They sang.

2. Complements

This part is very broad. You can enhance your sentences and provide details by adding any complements. These can be direct or indirect objects, locations, times.

Examples: María come pollo/María eats chicken. Yo fui a la playa/I went to the beach. Nosotros visitamos Argentina/We visited Argentina. Ellos cantaron una canción de Michael Jackson/They sang a Michael Jackson song.

Let's see some types of complements that you can use to add details to your sentences:

  1. Direct object: this complement answers the question "what" or "whom" after the verb. Ex: Ella lee un libro/She reads a book.
  2. Indirect object: Indicates the recipient of the action or to whom something is done. Ex: Mi mamá me dio las llaves/ My mom gave me the keys.
  3. Adjective complement: provides descriptions to nouns or pronouns. Ex: The house is big/La casa es grande.
  4. Comparative and superlative complements: to show a comparison between two or more things. I am taller than you/Soy más alta que tú.
  5. Time complement: specifies when an action takes place. Ex: I'll see my boyfriend next week/Veré a mi novio la próxima semana.
  6. Quantity complement: indicates how much or how many of something. Ex: I watched two movies/Vi dos películas.

The type of complement you use depends on the context and the information you want to give. These can improve you spanish sentences and help you communicate more precisely.

3. Verb tenses

Use different verb tenses to indicate when the action happens. This is key to actually send a message, and for people to understand the meaning.
