My experience learning Indonesian

8

I have been studying Indonesian daily for two months. My native language is Spanish, and I was stunned because of how different the two languages are. Those differences were a little hard to understand at first, but things got easier with time. But there is one reason why things got easier in the first place, and it is because of the community of people that exists in Langoid.

My first and most important recommendation is: be part of the community. You can do a lot of activities, but I highly recommend you to try those activities in which you can get feedback from others, for example: writing stories, doing reading tasks, translating other people's stories, etc. People's feedback and explanations are the most helpful thing ever, because you not only correct your mistakes, but you also know why. If you have thousands of corrections, but not an explanation, you are never going to get better, because you learn to repeat and you don't fully understand the reasons why you were wrong at first. For example, I would have never known that Indonesian doesn't have a verb "to be" if it wasn't because of this! Also, if you have any questions don't hesitate to look for help! And don't wait for others to help you, also try to help others in their learning process. Take your time to scroll around the forums, it is going to help you understand a lot of grammatical rules.

Now, you also need to make a personal effort. Learning a language takes time and patience, and your success depends on how much effort you put into it. It is very important to understand that mistakes are part of the process. You are not supposed to know everything, so don't get discouraged and keep going!

Note-taking really worked for me. I don't have the brightest memory, so taking notes within Langoid was the best decision ever. I recommend to create categories for the different grammatical categories, for example: nouns, adjectives, verbs, adverbs, conjunction, etc. Words are going to be easier to find and to understand.

If you have any questions regarding Spanish, English or Portuguese I'm happy to help!

Hai Sofia! Saya senang sekali dengan progress kamu selama dua bulan ini. Saya tidak menyangka bisa secepat itu.

Saya suka saran kamu untuk membuat kategori di notes. Sebelumnya saya hanya menuliskan catatan di setiap kata. Terimakasih untuk sarannya :)
