Pronunciation of the letter H

Learntalk | Pronunciation: The Enigma of the H Sound | Learntalk

As an english teacher to spanish-speaking people, I've seen countless students struggle with the pronunciation of the letter H. It is a little, but important detail, so I think it is worth to explain.

At the beginning of the word:

  1. In english, the letter "H" is not silent.
  2. In spanish, the letter "H" is COMPLETELY silent.

An example of the pronunciation of the word "Hotel":

  1. In English: The letter H has a little sound that makes the person seem to release air out of their mouth.
  2. In spanish: Act like the letter H does not exist. It would be like saying OTEL in english. We go straight to the pronunciation of the O.

So, if you speak english and are learning spanish, remember this for all the words that start with "H".

Just act like it's not there!
