Even though the verbs “ser” and “estar” can be translated to the same verb “to be”, there are very different situations in which you can use each.
We use “ser” when something or someone has a permanent characteristic, for example a description.
| Spanish | English |
| La silla es azul. | The chair is blue. |
| La niña es bonita. | The girl is pretty. |
| Yo soy feliz. | I am happy. |
We use “estar” to describe a temporary situation. For this reason, when asking someone how they are, we ask “¿Cómo estás?” because we understand that this answer is temporary and can change.
| Spanish | English |
| El cielo está gris. | The sky is grey. |
| La casa está desordenada. | The house is messy. |
| Yo estoy feliz hoy. | I am happy today. |

What an incredible explanation! Spanish is my native language and I had never thought of this.
