Wenn - not to be mistaken for wann!

Wenn is a conjuction in German langauge, that can a lot of times be mistaken for wann. In the previous topic, we talked about als/wann and we said that both of them mean when. Now, wenn sounds similar, but it has a completely other meaning. Wenn means IF.

Let's see how we can use wenn in sentences:

Wenn es regnet, gehe ich mit meinem Freund ins Park nicht. -----> If it rains, I will not go to the park with my friend.

Wenn wir ein Haus kaufen, mache ich ein Party. ------> If we buy a house, I will make a party.

Ich kaufe eine Jacke, wenn ich Geld habe. ------> I will buy a jacket, if I have money.

Important to note here is that:

  1. when we have a sentence with wenn in the first place, it whole counts as a position 1 and then the verb comes right after the comma, as position 2
  2. in the smaller sentence with wenn, the verb goes to the last position
