In every language, we have prepositions (for example in English those are: in, on, at, by, for...)

Prepositions always go in front of some noun. In German language, we know that there are cases of nouns, so we may ask ourselves how can we know in which case to put noun that goes after some preposition.

Here, I will list some of the prepositions that always require noun after them to be in specific case:

Accusative:

  1. bis - up to
  2. für - for
  3. durch - through
  4. um - at (some) time
  5. ohne - without
  6. gegen - against

Example: Ich habe dir etwas für deinen Geburtstag gekauft. -------> I bought you something for your birthday.

Dative:

  1. aus - out of
  2. bei - at
  3. mit - with
  4. nach - after/to
  5. seit - from (some time mentioned) Ich lebe in Deutschland seit 2008.
  6. zu - to
  7. von - from

Example: Ich gehe ins Kino mit deiner Schwester. ------> I am going to the cinema with your sister.

Genitive:

  1. während - during
  2. trotz - despite
  3. wegen - because of
  4. (an)statt - instead /instead of

Example: Wir gehen ins Kino trotz des Regens. ------> We are going to the cinema despite rain.
