Polish Genitive (Dopełniacz)
The Genitive case corresponds to the English "of" (possession), but it is also strictly required for Negation and Quantities.
It answers the questions: Kogo? (Of whom?) and Czego? (Of what?).
When to use Genitive:
- Possession: To jest książka mojego syna. (This is my son's book / Book of my son).
- Negation (The Golden Rule): If a sentence is negative (nie), the Direct Object switches from Accusative to Genitive.
- Mam czas (Acc) → Nie mam czasu (Gen).
- Lubię to (Acc) → Nie lubię tego (Gen).
- Quantity: After numbers (5+) and quantity words like dużo (a lot), mało (little), kilka (a few).
- Dużo pracy. (A lot of work).
- Specific Verbs: szukać (to look for), słuchać (to listen to), uczyć się (to learn), potrzebować (to need), używać (to use), bać się (to be afraid of).
- Specific Prepositions: od (from), do (to/into), dla (for), z (from/out of), bez (without), koło (near).
Personal Pronouns
Pronouns in Genitive are very similar to Accusative. The main difference is the 3rd person (he/she/it/they), which adds an "n-" when used after a preposition.
