Polish Plural

★ 24

Forming plural nouns in Polish (Nominative Plural) depends entirely on the gender of the word. Some forms are very simple, while others (specifically for men) involve more changes.

⚠️ Prerequisite: You must know the gender of the noun to choose the correct plural ending. If you need to learn this, read: Polish Gender.

Here are the rules for turning singular nouns into plural.

1. Neuter Nouns (Rodzaj Nijaki) 👶

The Rule: Change the end vowel to -a.

This is often surprising because -a is usually associated with feminine singulars. But in the plural, -a is the marker for Neuter nouns.

Example

-o

Okno -> Okna (Windows)

-e

Miejsce -> Miejsca (Places)

-um

-a

Muzeum -> Muzea (Museums)

Exception: Dziecko (Child) -> Dzieci (Children).

2. Feminine & Masculine "Things" 👩🐈🚗

This group includes:

  1. All Feminine nouns
  2. Masculine Objects (Inanimate)
  3. Masculine Animals (Animate)

The Rule: Look at the last letter of the stem (the sound before the ending).

Simplified Summary:

  1. Hard ends in -y.
  2. K/G ends in -i.
  3. Soft/Hushed ends in -e.

3. Masculine Personal Nouns (Rodzaj Męskoosobowy) 👨1

This category is strictly for Male Humans. It is the most complex group because it often involves changing the noun's ending and the stem sound.

There are two main ways to form plurals for men.

A. The "Honorific" Ending: -owie

This ending is used for family relations, titles, and prestigious professions.

  1. Pan -> Panowie (Gentlemen/Sirs)
  2. Ojciec -> Ojcowie (Fathers)
  3. Syn -> Synowie (Sons)
  4. Król -> Królowie (Kings)
  5. Profesor -> Profesorowie (Professors)

B. The "Softening" Ending: -i / -y

For other men (nationalities, generic roles), the ending causes the final consonant to "soften" (mutate).
