Irgendein = any, how to use it

★ 21

"irgendein" is usually used to mean "any" in the sense of "any one, it doesn’t matter which" — very similar to English "any" in positive or conditional sentences.

🔹 Examples:

English

German

Take any book.

Nimm irgendein Buch.

If you see any cat, tell me.

Wenn du irgendeine Katze siehst, sag mir Bescheid.

He just picked any place to sit.

Er hat sich einfach irgendeinen Platz ausgesucht.

So, when "any" means "whichever one" / "random one", then "irgendein" fits.

🔹 But not all "any" = irgendein!

Look at these examples where "irgendein" is NOT used:

English

German

Why

I don’t have any books.

Ich habe keine Bücher.

Negative — use kein, not irgendein

Do you have any water?

Hast du (etwas) Wasser?

Question — not about “whichever one”

Is there any problem?

Gibt es ein Problem? / Irgendein Problem?

Both possible, but "ein" sounds more neutral

irgendein

Nimm irgendein Buch.

None / Not at all

kein

Ich habe keine Zeit.

Some amount (questions)

For plural: use einige

"einige" means "some" or "a few", and it's used with plural countable nouns.

🔹 Examples:

German

English

Ich habe einige Bücher gelesen.

I read some books.

Einige Leute mögen Kaffee nicht.

Some people don't like coffee.

Wir haben einige Fragen.

We have a few questions.

"einige" only works with plural countable nouns:

  1. ✅ einige Bücher
  2. ❌ einige Wasser (✘ wrong — "Wasser" is uncountable → use etwas Wasser)
