Polish Cases

★ 24

Polish is an inflected language. This means that words (nouns, pronouns, adjectives, and demonstratives) change their endings depending on their function in the sentence. These changes are called Cases (Przypadki).

There are 7 Cases in Polish. Here is what they do:

  1. Nominative (Mianownik): The Subject (Dictionary form). Answers: Who is doing it?
  2. Accusative (Biernik): The Direct Object. Answers: Whom/what am I seeing/liking?
  3. Instrumental (Narzędnik): The Tool/Company. Answers: With whom/what?
  4. Locative (Miejscownik): The Location. Answers: About whom/what? (Always with prepositions).
  5. Dative (Celownik): The Recipient. Answers: To whom/what?
  6. Genitive (Dopełniacz): The Possessor/Negation. Answers: Of whom/what?
  7. Vocative (Wołacz): The Address. Used when calling someone.
