Polish Locative (Miejscownik)
The Locative case never appears alone. It is always used with preposition. It describes the static location of an object or the topic of conversation.
It answers the questions: Gdzie? (Where?) and O czym? (About what?).
When to use Locative:
You must use it strictly after these prepositions:
- w (in)
- na (on / at)
- o (about)
- przy (by / next to)
- po (after / around)
Personal Pronouns
Because Locative is always used with prepositions, the third-person pronouns (he, she, it, they) always take the "n-" form.
Subject | Locative Form | Examples |
ja | mnie | mówisz o mnie. |
ty | tobie | myślę o tobie. |
on | nim | to jest na nim. |
ona | niej | marzę o niej. |
ono | nim | to jest w nim. |
my | nas | mówią o nas. |
wy | was | myślę o was. |
oni | nich | słyszę o nich. |
one | nich | czytam o nich. |
Noun Endings (Singular)
The Locative singular is famous for Sound Changes (Mutations). The ending you choose depends on the gender and the last consonant.
A. Masculine & Neuter Nouns 👨👶
These two genders follow the same rules. You must choose between -ie and -u.
❖ The "-ie" Rule (Hard Consonants)
If the word ends in a Hard Consonant (d, t, r, ł, s, z, n, m, w, b, p), add -ie.
⚠️ Important: This ending forces the consonant to "soften" (mutate).
Mutation Table:
- d → dzi (sąsiad → o sąsiadzie)
- t → ci (brata → o bracie)
- r → rz (biuro → w biurze)
- ł → l (stół → na stole)
❖ The "-u" Rule (Soft, Velar, Hushed)
Use -u if the stem ends in:
- Velars (k, g, ch): park → w parku.
- Soft Sounds (si, ci, ni...): koń → o koniu.
- Hushed Sounds (sz, cz, rz, ż): lekarz → o lekarzu.
- Exceptions: dom → w domu, syn → o synu, pan → o panu.
B. Feminine Nouns 🎀
Feminine nouns are tricky. To make it clear, we will divide them into three distinct groups.
✶ The Mutators (-ie / -e)
These endings change the sound of the stem.
- Hard Consonants: Add -ie.
- szafa → w szafie (f → fi)
- woda → w wodzie (d → dzi)
- mama → o mamie (m → mi)
- Velars (K/G): Add -e (but the sound changes!).
- k → c (Polska → w Polsce)
- g → dz (noga → o nodze)
✶ The Soft Consonants (-i) If the word is already soft (ends in si, ni, ci, ji, l), just add -i.
- babcia → o babci.
- pani → o pani.
✶ The Hushed & "C" Group (-y) This is the rule for "Functionally Soft" consonants. Even though they sound hard, they take -y.
- Stem ends in sz, cz, rz, ż: wieża → na wieży.
- Stem ends in "C": (See specific rule below).
💡 Special Rule: Why "Na Ulicy"? (The "C" Rule) Learners often ask: "Why is it na ulicie wrong?"
The Reason: In Polish grammar, the letter C is considered a Soft consonant. It refuses to take the -ie ending because it is already soft. However, unlike babcia, words ending in -ca take -y.
- Ulica → na ulicy.
- Tablica (Whiteboard) → na tablicy.
- Granica (Border) → na granicy.
Noun Endings (Plural)
Locative Plural is the simplest part of Polish grammar.
Rule: Every noun, regardless of gender, ends in -ach.
Examples:
- dokumenty → w dokumentach.
- kobiety → o kobietach.
- koledzy → o kolegach.
- dzieci → o dzieciach.
(Exceptions are very rare, mostly involving countries like "Węgry" -> "na Węgrzech").
Adjectives, Demonstratives & Possessives
These words must agree with the noun.

- polski → w polskim domu.
- długi → o długim filmie.
Use -ym: For everything else (Standard).
